Our Story
"We don't serve tomorrow's BBQ today."
Rueben Okafor started Smoky Oak with one offset smoker on South Congress in 1987. He learned from his grandfather in East Texas — low fire, white oak, patience, salt and pepper. Nothing else.
37 years later, we light the pits at 10pm every night. Whatever doesn't sell by close is gone. We'd rather disappoint you at 2pm than serve cold meat at 6.
We're Open
Most days we sell out by 3pm. Follow us on Instagram for daily smoke updates.

"Best brisket in Texas. I drove 3 hours and I would drive 3 more. Come early or you'll be heartbroken."
— James W., Houston TX
"Smoky, tender, perfect bark. The ribs pull clean from the bone. This is what BBQ is supposed to taste like."
— Maria C., Austin Local
"Catered our company picnic for 80 people. Everyone lost their minds. Rueben showed up personally to make sure things were right."
— Derek T., Austin TX
